Accommodation is an original 25 x 25 inch mixed media artwork by Canadian artist Andy Tucker, created using acrylic on paper and canvas board. The piece began with a nude live-model drawing session at Victoria College and developed into a complex exploration of accommodation, consumption, displacement, sexuality, war, and the ways society can expect individuals to sacrifice their comfort for others.
At the centre of the artwork is a nude model posed uncomfortably on a bed of newspapers. She wears stockings as a symbolic reference to the sexualization she experiences within the life-drawing environment and the expectation that she accommodate the perspectives and desires of those observing her. Positioned like something placed on display for consumption, the figure becomes part of a larger examination of how people can be treated as objects for others.
Throughout the mixed media composition, Andy Tucker incorporates newspaper imagery, advertisements, magazine cutouts, painted figures, and symbolic references. A circled apartment advertisement introduces the idea of housing and living accommodation, while the scene beyond the window shows a woman looking toward a landscape devastated by the Serbian War.
The window is the central focus of Accommodation. The woman looking out toward the destroyed town represents displacement and the search for somewhere safe to live—a powerful contrast to the other forms of accommodation explored throughout the artwork.
The surrounding figures and imagery add further layers to the composition, including altered magazine imagery representing artists and observers, a nun, a hockey player whose public experience of being outed and ostracized interested the artist, and a child watching from a doorway.
This original Canadian mixed media artwork is available for purchase and is an important piece for collectors interested in contemporary Canadian art, figurative art, conceptual artwork, social commentary, political art, mixed media paintings, and original artwork with narrative meaning.
Accommodation by Andy Tucker is a visually layered and thought-provoking artwork that invites viewers to consider who is expected to accommodate others—and what the cost of that accommodation can be.
